Members Holiday Meeting!

On December 3rd at 3:00 pm, join us at historic Mount Bernard to hear Dr. Mary Lynn Bayliss’ lecture on the Dooleys of Maymont. The lecture is built around her new book, “The Dooleys of Richmond: An Irish Immigrant Family in the Old and New South. The book recounts the lives of the family from the antebellum years through the building of Maymont during the gilded age. Dr. Bayliss will sign books after the lecture. Please bring a dessert or hors d‘oeuvres for our refreshment table. Parking is limited so car pool if you can.

Mount Bernard, the home of our hosts, Donald and Maria Becker, was built c. 1850 on an earlier foundation. The house had been known previously as Lightfoot’s Beaverdam Plantation and Kameschatka before changing to Mount Bernard in the 1850’s. The main house was enlarged in the 1920’s by Robert Winship Woodruff, President of Coca-Cola. He also changed the front to reflect the Classical Revival design that was popular at the time. The home was next owned by T. Brady Saunders, President of Miller Manufacturing who also left his imprint on the home with side and rear additions.

Before the lecture, the new Board of Directors will be voted on and new officers selected. This is a members meeting so if you would like to attend, please join the society and we will see you at the meeting!
