Canal History Walk

Did you know a canal ran the length of Goochland County 150 years ago?

It’s true - the James River and Kanawha Canal went from Richmond to Lynchburg and on to Buchanan, Virginia along the James River. Come and hear a 30-minute free presentation on whose idea it was to build a canal (you might be surprised to find out who), when the canal was built, how it was built, the kinds of traffic that went up and down the canal past Goochland, what it was like to ride on the canal, when and why the canal ceased operation, and what took place. On Saturday, September 30th, at 2:00 pm, at 555 Lee Road (Route 628 - the last house on the road), the presentation will take place beside a still-existing short portion of the canal. You may park right beside where the presentation will take place. Come out and hear about one of the factors that shaped Goochland County into the place it is today! Please let us know if you plan to attend at 804-556-3966 or at!
